Arbeidsmiljølovens regler om pauser skal verne arbeidstaker. Reglene er ufravikelige, slik at det ikke kan avtales mindre gunstige pauseregler sett fra arbeidstakerens side, se § 1-9. Hovedreglene om pauser står i arbeidsmiljøloven § 10-9. Arbeidstaker skal ha minst en pause hvis arbeidstiden er mer enn fem og en halv time. Hvis arbeidstiden er minst åtte timer, skal pausen eller pausene være til sammen minst en halv time. Om man har krav på betalt pause, avhenger av hvordan pausene gjennomføres
